Tamko Roofing: The Long Beach Owner’s Guide
We stock and install Tamko-compatible roofing parts across Long Beach, with repairs on most single-family homes running $400 to $1,800 depending on what failed and how much decking needs replacement. The most common failure we see is a punctured or wind-lifted shingle that lets water under the field, which owners usually discover as a brown ceiling stain in the upstairs bedroom or garage.
Tamko builds a solid asphalt shingle, but Long Beach salt air and the July-to-October heat do specific things to roofing. The granules wear faster near the coast, the seal strips can cook loose at the eaves, and the underlayment under exposed roof valleys dries out and cracks years before the shingles themselves fail. We’ll walk you through what fails first, what we stock on the truck, and what an honest replacement costs in this market.
Which Tamko Models This Applies To

The parts we carry fit Tamko’s three dominant asphalt shingle lines in Long Beach: Heritage (their architectural series, 4 bundles per square, standard 39-3/8″ width), Heritage Premium (heavier, 110 mph wind rating, used on newer coastal builds), and Elite Glass-Seal (their 3-tab, common on older Rancho Estates and Los Altos homes).
Here’s the compatibility gotcha that trips up homeowners: Tamko changed their shingle exposure dimension slightly when they moved manufacturing lines around 2016. A pre-2016 Heritage shingle is ALMOST the same size as a current one, but the seal strip is positioned differently. If you patch with the wrong era, the repair shows as a visible seam and won’t seal properly. We measure the exposed tab height (should be 5-5/8″ on current Heritage, 5″ on older runs) before we order anything.
On the OEM versus aftermarket question for Tamko specifically: Tamko’s warranty only covers materials, and it’s prorated heavily after the first five years. A quality aftermarket match (Malarkey, CertainTeed, or GAF in a matching color blend) often looks better on a ten-year-old roof than trying to source Tamko from the same dye lot. We’ll show you both numbers and let you decide. Sawyer Remodel Long Beach is an independent service provider; we’re not affiliated with Tamko directly, which means we can quote you honestly about which path makes sense.

Signs Your Tamko Roofing Is Failing
- Granule buildup in the gutters during summer. Tamko shingles shed granules as the asphalt oxidizes, but if you’re filling a fist-sized pile every quarter, the shingle substrate is exposed and UV is now eating the fiberglass mat. This is a replacement-level symptom, not a repair.
- Curling at the eaves on the south and west exposures. Long Beach’s afternoon sun hits those slopes hardest. The seal strip releases, the shingle lifts, and wind-driven rain rides under the field. You can spot it from the street without getting on a ladder.
- Algae streaking that looks like black teardrops. This is common within two miles of the ocean. It’s cosmetic on day one, but algae retains moisture and shortens shingle life. Zinc strips or an algae-resistant replacement field fixes it.
- Ceiling stains near the chimney or vent pipes. The flashing around penetrations fails before the shingles do. If you see a stain directly below a pipe boot, the rubber collar has cracked, and water is running along the pipe into the attic.
- Shingle fragments in the yard after a Santa Ana wind event. A Tamko shingle that tears clean off in wind means the nail pattern was wrong or the shingle was brittle. Either way, the roof is now open to weather and needs patching before the next rain.

AfterReplacement Cost & What’s Included

In Long Beach, a Tamko-compatible roof repair typically runs $400 to $1,800 installed. The low end is a few missing shingles patched with compatible color and sealed. The high end is a valley re-roof: new metal valley flashing, underlayment, and shingle cuts on both slopes. Full field replacement on an average 1,800-square-foot ranch in Los Altos or Bixby Knolls lands between $8,000 and $20,000, depending on decking condition.
- Shingle patch (up to 10 shingles): $400 – $600
- Pipe boot or vent flashing replacement: $350 – $550
- Valley re-roof with new flashing: $700 – $1,200
- Full Tamko Heritage re-roof (1,800 sq ft): $8,000 – $16,000
- Full Tamko Heritage Premium re-roof with new underlayment: $14,000 – $20,000
Every quote is written, line-itemed, and locked before we pick up a tool. That means the dump fees, the tear-off labor, the underlayment, the nails, the shingle bundles, and the flashing are all on the page. No change orders at the door. Our workmanship carries the same 365-Day Done Right Promise as every Sawyer Remodel project: if it’s not done right, we make it right, in writing on the job.
DIY or Call Us?
Here’s where the line is for roofing. You can safely check the gutter granules from the ground, note where a ceiling stain is, and photograph the slope from the street. What you shouldn’t do is get on a roof without fall protection, re-nail a shingle seam on a 6/12 pitch, or try to seal a valley with caulk from the big box store.
Roof work is genuinely dangerous: one wrong step on loose granule debris, one slipped boot on a dew-wet slope, and it’s a hospital trip, not a savings. We run with harnesses, boots, and a second person on the ground. If you want to eyeball it yourself before calling, we respect that, but get the ladder out only if you’ve got a spotter and a tie-off. For everything past that, call (562) 512-6480 and we’ll send someone who does this every week.
FAQs

In coastal Long Beach, expect 15 to 20 years from an installed Tamko Heritage field, with granules wearing faster within two miles of the beach and on south-facing slopes. A full sun-exposed roof in Bixby Knolls will hit replacement age sooner than a shaded roof in Belmont Heights. Call (562) 512-6480 and we’ll inspect yours against that timeline for free.
Most single-point failures, like a punctured shingle or a cracked pipe boot, are repairable for $400 to $600 and extend the life of the roof by years. If the shingles are cupping across multiple slopes or the granules are stripping to bare fiberglass, a patch just buys months. We’ll tell you the honest line between repair and replacement during the estimate.
Most repairs are done in three to five hours on site, including setup, the repair, and a full inspection of the surrounding field for hidden damage. We do a before-and-after photo walkthrough and send you the invoice by link when the crew’s done. Call (562) 512-6480 to get on the schedule.
Our trucks carry common Tamko-compatible patching shingles in the region’s dominant color tones, plus pipe boots, valley flashing, and sealant rated for asphalt composite roofing. If your roof needs a specific dye lot or a heavier Heritage Premium stock, we can typically source it same-week through our local Long Beach suppliers. Call (562) 512-6480 and we’ll confirm before dispatch.
