Quikrete Kitchen Remodeling: The Long Beach Owner’s Guide

We install and work with Quikrete products in kitchen remodels across Long Beach, and a full Quikrete-based kitchen project here typically runs $14,000 to $45,000 installed. Most owners call us after a countertop pour has cracked, a mortar bed under tile has started crumbling, or a Quikrete underlayment has failed under a new floor. You don’t need to rip everything out and start over. In a lot of cases, the failed portion can be cut, chipped, and re-poured faster than you’d think, and we keep the Quikrete mixes and compatible materials on the truck to do it.

The symptom picture is usually pretty consistent. You notice a hairline crack running across a concrete countertop that widens every few weeks. Or a floor tile starts rocking because the Quikrete self-leveling underlayment beneath it has gone soft. Or worse, a backsplash bond fails and you can hear a hollow sound when you tap it. By the time you’re seeing those signs, the Quikrete has already lost its grip or its structural integrity. Waiting means the fix gets bigger and more expensive. Calling early means we’re often patching a section instead of replacing an entire run.

Which Quikrete Models This Applies To

A walk-in pantry with wood shelving

Quikrete makes a wide range of products that end up in Long Beach kitchens, but the ones we work with most are the countertop mix, the self-leveling underlayment, the mortar mix and thin-set, and the concrete bonding adhesive. Each behaves differently, and each has its own compatibility gotchas that matter when you’re matching a repair to what’s already there.

The big one: Quikrete Countertop Mix has a different cure profile and aggregate size than standard Quikrete 5000 or general-purpose concrete mix. If someone patches a countertop with the wrong mix, you get a color mismatch and a weaker bond line. We match the product family by the original bag label or the pour date when we can, and we know what to look for on older installs where the label is long gone. For underlayment work, Quikrete Self-Leveling Floor Resurfacer has a working time of about 10 to 12 minutes once mixed, which is shorter than most DIYers expect. If you’re mixing it yourself in a Long Beach kitchen, that clock is working against you, especially on warmer days when the mix sets up even faster. For most homeowners, an OEM product matched to the original pour is the right call. Aftermarket or generic equivalents exist, but they rarely match the color and cure characteristics of a Quikrete product that’s been in place for years.

Signs Your Quikrete Kitchen Remodeling Is Failing

Here’s what we see most often on service calls in Long Beach:

  • Cracks running through a concrete countertop. This comes from insufficient reinforcement, a bad cure, or movement in the cabinet base beneath. A straight hairline is cosmetic. A crack that’s widening or offset means the structural bond is gone and the section needs to come out.
  • Hollow-sounding areas when you tap the backsplash or floor. That’s the Quikrete losing its bond with the substrate. Water, movement, or a rushed install is usually behind it. Left alone, tiles start popping off.
  • Powdering or crumbling at edges. If your countertop edge or a floor patch is turning to dust when you run a finger across it, the mix was too wet when it was poured or it cured too fast. This is common in Long Beach kitchens near windows where direct sun hits the concrete during the cure. It doesn’t self-heal; it gets worse.
  • Staining or dark patches that won’t dry. Concrete wicks moisture. If a Quikrete surface is pulling water from a sink leak or slab moisture, you’ll see dark patches that stay damp. That moisture is also eating the bond from underneath.
  • Tiles cracking across the floor in a straight line. A crack that runs in a near-perfect line through your tile usually follows a crack in the Quikrete underlayment below. The underlayment cracked first, and the tile just followed. Patching the tile won’t fix it; the underlayment has to be addressed.

Replacement Cost & What’s Included

A remodeled kitchen with a waterfall island and wood cabinets

In Long Beach, a targeted Quikrete repair like fixing a countertop section or re-pouring a failed underlayment patch typically falls in the $800 to $2,500 range. A full Quikrete-based kitchen remodel, which includes new countertops, a re-leveled floor, tile work, and fresh backsplash, lands between $14,000 and $45,000 depending on square footage, edge profiles, and whether we’re pulling cabinets or working around them.

What drives the spread? The amount of demolition matters. Chipping out a 6-square-foot section of failed countertop is one thing. Pulling a full island, re-framing, and re-pouring from scratch is another. Materials are part of it too, but for Quikrete work, the labor is the biggest variable because concrete work is physical and time-sensitive. Every quote we write includes the parts, the labor, disposal of the old material, and a written price before we start. No charge for the estimate. No surprise line items at the end. And every Quikrete repair we do carries our 365-Day Done Right Promise: if it’s not right, we make it right, in writing, for a full year.

DIY or Call Us?

If you have a small hairline crack in a countertop, you can monitor it. Mark the ends with tape and a date. If it hasn’t moved in two months, it’s cosmetic and you can leave it alone. If it’s growing, call us. The same goes for a hollow tile or two, watch it, tap around it, and see if the hollow area is spreading.

Here’s where DIY goes wrong with Quikrete: mixing ratios. Concrete and mortar products fail early for one of two reasons, either the mix was too wet, or the cure was rushed. A homeowner mixing a 50-pound bag in a tub with a drill attachment gets inconsistent results. We get the same problem when someone patches a failed pour with the wrong product family, and now you have two different materials with two different expansion rates glued to each other. Concrete dust from grinding or chipping is a respiratory irritant too; we run proper dust control and respirators on every job. If you’re in Long Beach and the failure is bigger than a hairline, call (562) 512-6480. We’ll tell you over the phone if it’s worth a service visit or if you can live with it.
