Sterling Driveway & Pavers: The Long Beach Owner’s Guide
If your Sterling paver driveway has a cracked paver, a sunken section, or edging that’s coming loose, we stock Sterling-compatible pavers and can usually match the color and size without tearing out the whole driveway. For Long Beach homes, paver repair typically runs $350 to $1,200 depending on how many pavers failed and whether the base underneath needs re-compacting. Most owners discover the problem after a rainstorm, when a low spot turns into a puddle that wasn’t there last winter.
Here’s the thing about pavers: they don’t usually fail on their own. The paver is just the top layer. What fails underneath is the base, or the edge restraint, or a drainage detail that let water wash the sand out. We see it all the time on older Long Beach driveways near the coast, where sandy soil and salt air work on everything. Luca Romano has pulled up enough driveways across the city to know that a sunken paver is almost never “just one bad paver.”
Which Sterling Models This Applies To

Sterling’s paver line covers three main product families: the Holland Stone series (rectangular, 4×8 and 6×9), the Plaza series (square, mostly 6×6 and 8×8), and the more decorative Estate series with tumbled edges. Each series uses slightly different joint widths, so a paver from the Holland line won’t sit right in a Plaza driveway even if the colors look close.
Here’s the compatibility gotcha: Sterling changed paver thickness on the Holland Stone line around 2018. Older installs used 60mm pavers; newer ones run 80mm. If your driveway was installed before 2019, you need to measure or bring us a sample before we order replacements. Getting it wrong means the new pavers sit proud or low by almost an inch, which looks terrible and trips people.
We stock genuine Sterling Holland and Plaza pavers in the common Long Beach colors (charcoal, sand, terracotta), plus quality aftermarket equivalents that match those specs for the Estate series. For older Sterling lines that Sterling itself discontinued, aftermarket is sometimes the only option, and honestly, a good aftermarket paver from a California manufacturer often outperforms the original by a margin you can see in the color retention.

Signs Your Sterling Driveway & Pavers Is Failing
- One or two pavers sit lower than the rest. This means the sand bedding underneath washed out. Left alone, the depression spreads and more pavers start rocking. In Long Beach, it’s usually a downspout or a low edge dumping water in one spot.
- Joint sand keeps disappearing between pavers. Rain or a too-aggressive pressure washing routine strips the sand. Pavers then shift against each other, chip at the edges, and the pattern starts to wander.
- Edge pavers lean outward or separate from the border. The edge restraint failed or was never installed properly. Once the edge goes, the whole field can creep toward the street over a couple of years.
- Surface color has faded to chalky white, but only on one section. That’s usually a sprinkler overspray issue, or one batch of pavers that came from a different production run. Replacement pavers will never match that faded section, so we sometimes pull and rotate pavers from a less visible area to blend.
- A crack runs straight through multiple pavers in a line. That’s not a paver problem; it’s a base problem. The subgrade shifted, likely from a tree root or poor compaction. Replacing the cracked pavers without fixing the base means you’ll be back in a year with the same crack.

AfterReplacement Cost & What’s Included

For Long Beach, paver driveway repair runs about $350 to $1,200 for most spot repairs. That covers pulling the damaged pavers, re-leveling and compacting the base, reinstalling the pavers, and re-sanding the joints. If your base is badly compromised or there’s a drainage fix involved, you’re looking at the higher end or slightly more.
If you need a full paver driveway installation, that’s a different scope, running $7,000 to $18,000 in Long Beach depending on square footage, paver series, and site prep. We give you a written price before any work starts, and that price is the price on the invoice. No change orders the day before we finish because someone discovered a surprise.
Every repair includes our 365-Day Done Right Promise. If the repair fails within a year, we come back and make it right. No argument, no negotiation. That’s part of how Sawyer Remodel Long Beach runs every job, whether it’s a six-paver patch or a full driveway rebuild.
DIY or Call Us?
You can absolutely pull a loose paver and look at what’s underneath. If the sand is gone and the base looks like mush, you know what you’re dealing with. What you shouldn’t do is buy a bag of paver sand from the big box store, sprinkle it around, and call it fixed. That band-aid lasts about one winter in Long Beach before the same paver sinks again, often worse.
The real skill is in the base and the compaction. Without a plate compactor and the right base material, any repair you make is cosmetic. We bring the right equipment, the right sand mix, and we get the pitch right so water runs off instead of pooling. If you want to try patching one rocker yourself, go ahead. If you want it done once and forgotten, call us at (562) 512-6480 and we’ll send someone who does this every week.
FAQs

With a proper base and regular joint sand replenishment, Sterling pavers in Long Beach last 20 to 30 years. Proximity to the coast pushes that number down some, mostly because salt air and moisture attack the base and edge restraints, not the pavers themselves. Call us at (562) 512-6480 and we can look at what you have and tell you how much life is left in it.
A cracked paver can’t be glued back together in a driveway setting; it gets replaced. The repair is the diagnostic work around it: finding out why that paver cracked so the replacement doesn’t do the same thing. For a free estimate and an honest read on what’s going on underneath, call (562) 512-6480.
Most spot repairs on a Sterling driveway take half a day to a full day, depending on how many pavers are affected and whether the base needs re-compacting. We’ll tell you before we start, and our live arrival time means you know exactly when the crew pulls up. Call (562) 512-6480 to schedule a look.
We stock the common Sterling Holland and Plaza sizes and colors on our truck in Long Beach, and we can source the less common ones from our suppliers, usually within a few days. You don’t have to chase down a distributor or deal with a pallet minimum. Call (562) 512-6480 and tell us what you’ve got; we’ll match it.
If you have a Sterling driveway or paver patio that’s showing its age, call us at (562) 512-6480 for a free estimate. We’ll come out, look at the base, check the edge restraints, and give you a written price that covers the full fix. Sawyer Remodel Long Beach also stocks parts for KraftMaid, Cambria, and Silestone for the rest of the house, but today, let’s talk about that driveway. The work tells you everything. The rest is just talking.
