Techo-Bloc Home Additions & ADU: The Long Beach Owner’s Guide
A full home addition or ADU in Long Beach using Techo-Bloc hardscape products typically runs $45,000 to $130,000 installed, and the Techo-Bloc portion (pavers, walls, steps, coping) is usually $7,000 to $18,000 of that total depending on square footage and product line. We stock and install Techo-Bloc compatible materials for additions and ADU projects throughout Long Beach, and we can usually get your project quoted within a few days of the site visit.
Most Long Beach homeowners don’t call because a paver “failed.” They call because a retaining wall shifted after winter rain, a paver patio sank where the old garage slab was, or they’re mid-ADU build and need a hardscape contractor who won’t hold up the permit inspection. Techo-Bloc products are tough, but Long Beach soil – expansive clay that swells in wet winters and cracks in dry summers – punishes bad base prep more than any product flaw.
Which Techo-Bloc Models This Applies To

We work with the full Techo-Bloc catalog, but for home additions and ADUs in Long Beach, three product families cover about 90% of what we install:
- Blu 60 / Blu 80 pavers: The workhorse for ADU driveways, walkways, and patio areas. 60mm for pedestrian, 80mm for vehicle traffic. If your ADU has a parking pad requirement from the city, Blu 80 is what passes inspection the first time.
- Raffinato / Villagio wall blocks: For planter walls, seat walls, and short retaining walls that define the ADU’s outdoor space. These lock together differently than big-box blocks – the rear lip sets the setback, and you can’t just swap one for the other mid-wall.
- Valet / Industria slabs: For larger format patios and entry landings. These go down fast and look sharp against stucco, but they’re heavy – a single slab can weigh 80 to 100 pounds, which matters when your ADU site access is a 30-inch side gate.
Compatibility gotcha: Techo-Bloc paver sizes are metric and modular. You cannot mix Blu 60 with a random 4×8 paver from a supply yard and expect the pattern to hold. The joints walk, the bond breaks, and the patio looks like a checkerboard after one rainy season. If you’re matching an existing Techo-Bloc installation, take a photo of the paver face and measure it in millimeters – we can identify most products from that alone. One more thing: Sawyer Remodel Long Beach is an independent general contractor. We install Techo-Bloc products, but we’re not affiliated with Techo-Bloc corporate, and any warranty claim on the product runs through Techo-Bloc’s own coverage while our workmanship warranty covers the install.

Signs Your Techo-Bloc Home Additions & ADU Is Failing
- Pavers rock or wobble underfoot. The base layer has eroded or was never compacted properly. In Long Beach’s clay soil, a base without proper drainage will pump water up through the joints after a real winter rain, and the pavers start moving within a year.
- Joint sand keeps washing out after rain. This means water is flowing across the surface instead of draining through it. The slope is wrong, or the edge restraint failed and the whole field is creeping. Re-sanding without fixing the slope is a temporary fix – it’ll wash out again by February.
- A retaining wall is leaning or bulging. That’s hydrostatic pressure from trapped water behind the wall. In Long Beach, walls over 3 feet need drainage gravel, a perforated pipe, and often a permit. A leaning wall is a rebuild, not a push-back.
- Settling dips appear where old slab or foundation work was. When an ADU goes in, trenching for utilities cuts through the old compacted base. If the contractor backfills with loose dirt and slaps pavers on top, you’ll see a sunken line running right along the trench within 6 to 12 months.
- Edge course is separating from the field. The plastic edge restraint wasn’t spiked deep enough, or someone used cheap edging that flexes. Once the edge opens, it’s only a matter of time before the outer row drops and the pattern starts to fan.

AfterReplacement Cost & What’s Included

Here’s how Techo-Bloc hardscape costs break down for a Long Beach addition or ADU project:
| Scope | Typical Installed Cost |
|---|---|
| Paver driveway / parking pad (400 – 600 sq ft) | $7,000 – $14,000 |
| Paver patio or ADU side yard (300 – 500 sq ft) | $5,500 – $11,000 |
| Retaining wall (3 – 5 ft, 30 – 50 linear ft) | $4,500 – $9,500 |
| Steps, coping, and edge details | $2,000 – $6,000 |
| Full hardscape package for ADU lot | $15,000 – $32,000 |
The price range comes down to access, base condition, and product selection. Blu 80 costs more than Blu 60 because it’s thicker and heavier. A 30-inch side gate adds labor – every paver and wall block has to be wheelbarrowed in by hand, not with a skid steer. Written price before any work starts, no change orders unless you change the scope. If we install it, it’s covered by our 365-Day Done Right Promise: if something’s not right, we make it right, in writing.
DIY or Call Us?
You can safely handle the demo: pulling up old pavers, chipping out failed edge restraint, bagging and hauling debris. You can also dig the trench for a drain line if you know where your utilities are – call 811 before you do, Long Beach has more buried lines than people realize, especially in older neighborhoods near Belmont Shore and Alamitos Beach.
What you shouldn’t DIY: installing a retaining wall over 3 feet, running a paver field over utility trenches, or trying to re-compact a base without a plate compactor. A tamper from Home Depot won’t get you to 95% compaction, and a few years later the patio looks like a topo map. We’ve fixed enough homeowner base failures in Long Beach to say this plainly: the excavation and base prep are 80% of the job. Get that wrong, and the prettiest Techo-Bloc paver you own will telegraph every mistake. If you’d rather fight it once instead of twice, call (562) 512-6480 and we’ll give you a written line-item quote for free.
FAQs

A properly installed Techo-Bloc paver patio or wall system lasts 25 to 40 years in Long Beach’s climate. The pavers themselves rarely fail structurally; what gives out first is the base, the edge restraint, or the joint sand. We’ve seen 30-year-old pavers that look brand new sitting on a failed base, and the fix is a lift-and-relay with proper compaction, not new material. Call (562) 512-6480 and we can tell you whether your base is still sound.
If the sink is localized to one area, we can usually lift the affected section, re-compact the base, and relay the same pavers – that costs a fraction of a new install. If the entire field has crept because the edge restraint failed everywhere, a full lift-and-relay is the honest answer and usually runs 40-60% of new-paver cost since the material is reused. Either way, we’ll give you the written price before we touch anything.
Most paver patios and walkways go in within 3 to 5 working days. A full ADU hardscape package with retaining walls, driveway, steps, and drainage typically takes 1 to 2 weeks depending on access and weather. We schedule around your permit timeline – hardscape is usually the last trade before final inspection, and we’ll coordinate with your builder so the inspector sees a finished site.
We don’t warehouse Techo-Bloc inventory; we order per job because product, batch, and color must match, and pallets sitting in a Long Beach yard pick up dirt and moisture that affects the finish. That said, we maintain relationships with local Techo-Bloc distributors in the LA basin, so lead times are usually 3 to 7 days from order. If you’re matching an existing installation, we’ll order from the same product line and verify lot consistency before install.
If your Techo-Bloc home addition or ADU hardscape is failing – or you’re in the planning phase and want the paver work done right the first time – call Sawyer Remodel Long Beach at (562) 512-6480. We’ll walk the site, measure, and put a written price in your hands before any work starts. The work tells you everything. The rest is just talking.
