Wellborn Driveway & Pavers: The Long Beach Owner’s Guide
We install and repair Wellborn-compatible driveway and paver systems across Long Beach, and a paver driveway installation here typically runs between $7,000 and $18,000 depending on square footage, paver style, base preparation, and access. Most Long Beach owners discover a problem the same way: a low spot collecting water near the garage apron, a paver that’s started to rock underfoot, or sand washing out after winter rains. The good news is that paver failures are almost always repairable without tearing out the whole driveway, and we can usually get a crew out within a few days once you call.
One thing up front: Sawyer Remodel Long Beach is an independent contractor. We’re not affiliated with Wellborn, but we work with their paver and driveway product lines constantly, and we know how those materials behave in Long Beach’s coastal climate better than most. Lived here, worked here, torn apart enough failed driveways to know what actually holds up.
Which Wellborn Models This Applies To

Wellborn’s paver systems break into three lines that matter for Long Beach homes: the Estate series (larger format pavers, often 16×16 or larger, used for wider driveways), the Classic series (standard 4×8 and 6×9 pavers, the workhorse for most residential driveways), and the Permeable series (designed for drainage, increasingly required by Long Beach’s stormwater rules on new installations). If you don’t know which one you have, check the paver’s underside: Wellborn stamps the series name and a batch number into the bottom face of most pavers. No stamp? Measure it. Classic pavers are 60mm thick. Estate pavers run 80mm. Permeable pavers have visible spacer lugs on the sides, not just the top face.
For replacement parts, you’ll hit a decision: OEM Wellborn pavers or a quality aftermarket equivalent. The OEM route gets you an exact color match with your existing batch, which matters if your driveway has faded in the Long Beach sun. But batch numbers change, and a paver poured in 2019 won’t match a paver poured in 2025, even from the same manufacturer. That’s why we recommend pulling a paver from a hidden area (behind a gate or under a planter) and using it for the visible repair, then putting the new paver in the hidden spot. We do this on nearly every repair, and it keeps the color uniform where you actually see it.
Aftermarket equivalents from Belgard and Calstone hold up well in our climate, and we stock those on the truck for common sizes. The catch with aftermarket: edge profile and thickness need to match within 2mm or you’ll create a trip hazard and a drainage line. We check both before we quote, so the number we give you is the number you pay.

Signs Your Wellborn Driveway & Pavers Is Failing
- Rocking or shifting pavers. A paver that moves when you step on it means the bedding sand has washed out underneath, usually from a drainage issue or a failed edge restraint. Left alone, that paver will crack and the problem spreads outward like a slow leak.
- Sand washing out between joints after rain. Long Beach doesn’t get much rain, but when it does, it comes hard. If you see sand streaking down your driveway toward the street after a storm, your joint sand is loose and water is eroding the base layer. That’s a structural problem forming, not a cosmetic one.
- Low spots that pond water near the garage or front walk. Ponding means the base underneath has settled or compacted unevenly. In Long Beach’s clay-heavy soils, this happens to older installations that were laid without proper excavation depth. Water sitting on pavers accelerates freeze-thaw damage (yes, even here) and seeps down to degrade the base.
- Edge pavers spreading or pulling away from the driveway border. The edge restraint is the unsung hero of any paver driveway. When it fails, the whole field starts migrating outward under vehicle weight. You’ll see a widening gap where the driveway meets the lawn or walkway.
- Cracks running across multiple pavers in a line. A single cracked paver is a bad pour or impact damage. A crack that runs through three or four pavers in a straight line means the base underneath has failed at that seam, often from a buried tree root or an improperly compacted utility trench. That needs the pavers pulled, the base repaired, and the pavers reset.

AfterReplacement Cost & What’s Included

In Long Beach, full paver driveway installation runs $7,000 to $18,000. Most residential driveways in the city land around $10,000 to $14,000 for a two-car driveway using Classic series pavers. The spread comes down to three things: how deep we have to excavate and re-compact the base, whether you’re choosing a standard or permeable paver, and how much cutting is required around curves, drains, and walkways.
Repairs are a different animal. Pulling and resetting a 10×10 foot section of failing pavers, including new bedding sand, joint sand, and a repaired section of base, typically runs $1,500 to $4,500. A single paver swap, if we’re already on site for another job, is often under $300. Every quote we give includes parts, labor, disposal, and compaction, and it’s a written price before we start. No change orders unless you ask us to expand the scope. The 365-Day Done Right Promise covers every repair we make: if the pavers shift or the base settles within a year of our work, we come back and fix it at no charge.
If you need a full driveway replacement, we handle permits and inspections, and the price we quote includes both. Long Beach requires a permit for any driveway work that touches the public right-of-way or changes drainage patterns. We know exactly what the city asks for and we don’t cut corners on the paperwork.
DIY or Call Us?
You can inspect your own driveway safely. Walk it barefoot and feel for movement. Look at the joints after rain. Check the edges. Those are all safe, useful checks that tell us what we’re dealing with before we show up. What you shouldn’t do is start pulling pavers yourself. The pavers interlock under tension, and pulling one without understanding how the edge restraint works sends the load into the neighbors, which often breaks them. Then you’ve turned a $300 repair into a $3,000 reset.
The other reason to call: base failure is invisible until you lift the pavers. A driveway that looks fine on top can be sitting on 4 inches of poorly compacted fill that’s been washing away for a decade. We see it constantly in older Long Beach neighborhoods like Belmont Heights and Bixby Knolls, where driveways were put in before modern base standards existed. If you’ve got movement, don’t guess. Call (562) 512-6480 and we’ll give you an honest read, for free.
Luca Romano has torn apart enough failed driveways to know the difference between a surface problem and a base problem, and he’d rather tell you the truth than sell you a tear-out you don’t need. The work tells you everything. The rest is just talking.
FAQs

A properly installed paver driveway with a solid, compacted base and intact edge restraints lasts 25 to 40 years in Long Beach’s climate, while the pavers themselves rarely wear out. What fails first is almost never the paver; it’s the sand joints and the base underneath, which is why installation quality matters more than the paver brand. If your driveway is failing before year 15, the base or the drainage was the problem from day one. Call (562) 512-6480 and we’ll diagnose it properly.
In most cases, yes, a full replacement is only necessary when the base underneath has failed across a large area or the pavers themselves are spalling and degrading. Sectional repairs where we lift pavers, re-compact or rebuild the base, and reset the same pavers with fresh sand typically run $1,500 to $4,500 for a 10×10 foot area in Long Beach. We’ll always price the repair against the replacement and recommend whichever makes sense for your budget.
A typical sectional repair takes one to two days on site, including pulling the pavers, compacting the base, resetting, and sweeping in joint sand. Full driveway replacements in Long Beach run five to eight working days depending on size, access, and whether we’re pulling permits for work in the right-of-way. You’ll get a written schedule before we start, with live arrival times and photo updates so you always know what happened while you were at work.
We stock common Classic series sizes and colors on the truck, plus joint sand, bedding sand, and edge restraint materials, so most repair visits are one trip. If your driveway uses a specific color or a larger Estate format paver that we don’t carry, we’ll source it from a local supplier and schedule the repair once it’s in hand. Call (562) 512-6480 for a free estimate and we’ll tell you exactly what’s needed and when it’ll be done.
